Some of us may remember sporting these shoes on our feet. Of course women and girls wore them. I will give two hints: these were the shoes of the 1980s and early 1990s and made from plastic. Still did not get the hint?Does jelly shoes or "jellies" ring the bell? For some individuals, it will and for others, it leaves a blank slate. It definitely rings a bell for me because I owned more than a few pair growing up. These shoes were plastic to the max!As a kid, I used to think when many people mentioned jelly shoes that they meant that there was jelly jam inside. How wrong was I? Wrong as wrong can get! In fact, they were these hard plastic shoes that were very easy to tear up and in many cases, it made very sore feet. As an alternative to prevent sore feet, individuals installed pads in the shoes to keep comfortable and in style simultaneously. What were these jelly shoes made from? Jelly shoes are the products from a plastic known as PVC, or polyvinyl chloride. This allows the plastic to have more flexibility. Like various plastics, this type of plastic can be molded into many different colors and designs, whether it is clear or yellowish with glitter.Jelly shoes, for the most part, were very flat. In some instances, there were some with a very small heel. In addition to being flat and/or having a small heel, it had many beautiful designs and motifs on the shoes. Of course, they were considered as sandals. Besides having the beautiful loopy design features, glitter was the ultimate stand out feature on the jellies during the 1980s. It also included other designs such as circles and flowers.During my days of being the owner of the "jellies," usage out of these shoes was very plentiful. (I owned an approximate total of eight jelly shoes). This is a large number for jelly shoes. The two main problems that I had with these shoes were that my end toes always managed to sneak out of them and very sweaty feet. As a result, I began wearing socks with them.
They were very beautiful shoes when they were in existence. But just to be truthful and honest, I do not think that the jelly shoes, or "jellies" should make a comeback on the fashion scene due to its fragility.
